Our Bedroom with Parachute Home

Our master bedroom has come a long way since we first moved into our house back in November.  It is a very modest, cottage-like space that we didn’t know we were looking for when we first started our house hunt almost a year ago.  Most modern master bedrooms are MASSIVE and have tons of closet space, and seating areas and when we moved to Arizona we thought “yeah, we’ll take one of those!”, but man, when we first saw this house in the thick of our house hunt, we felt something special in the old charm of a very practical space.  This Tudor has seen a thing or two since being built in 1930 and we are letting her do the talkin’.  In our last apartment we made a conscious decision to make our bedroom a room for sleeping not an extension of our office or living room and we brought that theme over to our house.  It isn’t a room with a tv, or laptops, or anything that would distract us from feeling rested.  In our first apartment, putting a tv in our bedroom felt like a luxury.  We loved curling up in bed and watching movies until we felt tired enough to fall asleep.  It sounds great, and it probably was for a while there, but it definitely kept us from the rest we really needed.  Distractions are all around us, and we work in a field that is constantly swallowed up with technology, so we felt that if there was one room in our house that was just for us it would be the bedroom.

Little Kitchen Nook

New Darlings - Dining Room Kitchen Nook - Boho Mid-century styleNew Darlings - Dining Room Kitchen Nook - Boho Mid-century styleNew Darlings - Dining Room Kitchen Nook - Bar cart styleWe always have so much fun reading up on home decor, discovering new websites and books on inspiring spaces, new and old trends and great finds. Recently, we made a few small updates in the dining room/breakfast nook area of our apartment, that have made a big impact on the space.  A few small additions are really making it feel more homey.

We shared a peek into this room a while back, but there was still a lot that just felt unfinished. We are renting, so there is a limit to the amount of work we can (or should) do in each room.  Thankfully, for us, the walls were painted a great shade of white (we opted out of the traditional accent wall), which makes the room feel bright and airy, and was a great starting point for us. There wasn’t a light fixture when we moved in, so we hung this chandelier from West Elm and added Edison bulbs.

New Darlings - Kitchen Open ShelvingNew Darlings - Kitchen NookWe scored this John Vogel dining table on sale a while back when we were still living in our old apartment, and were so happy that it fit perfectly here in our new space. One day, down the line, when we’re in a bigger place (or make the transition to a house) we’d love to have a larger, rectangular version of this table.  The legs are just so pretty and something you don’t see very often.  It’s probably obvious we love mid-century design, but unless you’re a super savvy estate sale goer or are constantly hunting on Craigslist, it can be difficult to find some great vintage items at a good price. Phoenix has some amazing vintage furniture shops (see some of our favorites here), but before we discovered them we found some nice vintage-lookalikes on Overstock, which is where we found these dining chairs. We’ve had them for over two years now and they’re still going strong. The seats are super easy to wipe clean too, which is always a plus (and something we think about when buying furniture).

New Darlings - Cow Hide Rug - Avarcas SandalsOne of our favorite parts of this little nook is the rug. The living room and kitchen/dining area are all pretty close to each other, so we didn’t want it to feel confusing to the eye with too many patterns and prints going on. We found so many pretty shag rugs with different patterns and designs, but thought it might have been too much, so we opted for a neutral camel and beige cow hide inspired rug from Loloi. We found them a while back when we were shopping for pillows. They have such a huge selection of rugs, pillows and throws for all different rooms and styles. The design we chose from their Grand Canyon Collection is somewhat simple, but we feel it really pulls the room together, making it feel cozy and complete. We love it.

To finish off the space, we added some plants and this cool cactus skeleton from our friend’s local flowershop, around the hanging print. We love the texture it adds to the space. Our family back east always joke around with us about how much we’ve really embraced “desert style”. Although we don’t see a huge southwestern influence in our decor, always mixing in different elements and styles, we definitely love all the plant life and natural tones the desert has to offer.

Leather Furniture Favorites

New Darlings - Boho Midcentury Living RoomWe’ve always been fans of the classic look of leather furniture. Before moving in to our new place, we had planned what pieces we were going to bring along from our old apartment as well as some new purchases.  On the top of that list of new purchases was our leather sofa.  It was a piece we had both wanted for quite some time and we’re happy to say it’s still one of our favorites in our home. When we moved in and finished setting everything up, I was that nervous (maybe slightly OCD) person who cringed when a guest plopped themselves on the couch or chair in our living room. I had visions of scratches and deep rips setting into the furniture. “Did they have keys on their jeans or maybe a big ‘ol fancy belt buckle that would destroy the new furniture?” It was pretty comical and a bit neurotic, to say the least. Now almost a year later, the leather is aging beautifully, showing wrinkles and distress marks that only add character to the pieces.

Here’s a round up of some of our favorite leather furniture pieces with a mid-century flare…

Office Refresh

New Darlings - Office Space
When we moved to Arizona from New York in July of 2013, we thought we knew our style.  We made some impulse purchases and set up our dream space rather quickly only to find out that we may have pulled the trigger a little prematurely.  We found ourselves bringing things into our home that we liked a lot without thinking about the big picture.  Does this piece work with everything else?  That’s a question we wish we had asked ourselves.  When we decided to tackle our office space and do a complete refresh, we asked ourselves that question a whole lot.  We knew we loved the rest of our home, but the office just always felt unfinished.  This time around, we looked at the entire space.  Will this work with that? Does this color belong here? Does this even fit?  We think we asked all the right questions this time around, and finally we have an office space that makes sense, makes us feel comfortable, and most importantly inspires us.

New Darlings - home office - boho midcentury designNew Darlings - floating shelvesWe knew when we were designing this new space, that it was completely essential to include a place to sit back and relax.  It’s almost too easy to plop down in front of a computer screen and not move for several hours.  We get sucked into projects, editing photos, or just simply surfing the web, and some times the day goes by without ever having any real personal time.  Having a chair nestled away in the corner of the room, with a stack of inspiring books close by is such a nice way to step away from the screen for even just a few minutes.

New Darlings - The CitizenryNew Darlings - Home office - The Citizenry
We partnered up with The Citizenry to finally create that spot in our home to just simply zone out. Sit back and relax, throw your feet up, read a book, close your eyes, gaze out the window.  These things are so important to clear your busy brain.  The Palermo Tripolina chair was the answer to all the questions we had been asking, plus it’s pretty easy on the eyes.  Its gorgeous design had us swooning from the start and the story behind each handmade piece really drew us in.

The Citizenry’s philosophy really resonated with us…

“We believe our homes should be reflections of the journeys we take. Our personal spaces deserve designs with a soul, a story, and a purpose.”

Our surroundings are so important to our state of mind each day.  Creating a pleasing space for the eyes, creates a pleasing space for the mind. We made sure to continue the same theme as in our living room to create a natural flow throughout the apartment, while bringing in personal pieces that would spark new ideas and calming vibes. Above our desk (which was the one piece of furniture we kept, along with the desk chair), we hung a simple floating shelf, full of some trinkets like the wooden hand figure found while thrifting with family up in Sedona, desert rose rocks, a brass prism sculpture from our sweet friends over at Sisters of Nature, and a fun print we found on etsy a while back which used to hang in our old living room. We love that fun cycling duo!

New Darlings - Home office - hanging bike
Speaking of bicycles! We decided to hang our bikes in this room, as well.  They’re just as much of a piece of artwork as anything else in the room and we didn’t want them getting rusty out in the desert sun when they weren’t being used.  We threw around quite a few ideas about how we would do this, and finally came across this bike rack from CB2. The wooden design fit perfectly into the space, and the blue and black colors of the bikes blended in, rather than becoming a big eye sore. Overall, we’re happy with how it turned out and its super convenient for when we want to take a ride around town.

New Darlings - home office - bola baskets - midcentury design
Love these natural bolga baskets by Plum + Sparrow.  They’re perfect for holding little odds and ends and blankets to curl up with. We have one in almost every room. 🙂

New Darlings - Home officeNew Darlings - Office spaceTo complete the room, we added a printed shag rug with tassels, switched out the vertical blinds for some bright white linen curtains, and added some greenery from our local nurseries and flowershops. It’s amazing what some bright light and a few plants can do to pull a space together. 🙂

The next room we’re looking to tackle around here is our office/guest room. We’re thinking of replacing the futon/sleeper sofa, getting a new bookshelf, and maybe a little area rug.  Here are some favorites office furniture pieces, along with some fun desk accessories for your work space.

New Darlings - ASPCA West Elm Event New Darlings - ASPCA West Elm Event
We’re so excited to be hosting (and photographing) another event with our friends over at west elm. If you follow along with us on instagram or saw our living room makeover post here on the blog, it’s pretty clear we’re huge fans of the company’s furniture and design aesthetic, but what we love most is how they’re always finding ways to give back.  This holiday season they teamed up with the ASPCA on a creative way to help animals in need.

On Thursday, November 5th, we’ll be at west elm’s Scottsdale location, taking complimentary holiday photos of you and your pets! For every photo taken in-store and tagged using #westelmxaspca that day, west elm will donate $1 to the ASPCA.  Plus, all attendees will also receive a 20% off promotional code for minted.com, to order their personalized holiday cards. It’s kind of a win-win…free photos of you and your furry friends, plus a great way to give back during the holidays.

Our Dining Room Progress

New Darlings - Dining Room process New Darlings - Dining RoomOne room at a time, this apartment of ours is slowly coming together. It’s definitely been a process, but one we are enjoying and putting a lot of love in to.  One thing we have always struggled with was deciding on artwork.  It has always felt like such a big commitment and something that would dictate the whole feel of the room.  We’ve done gallery walls in the past, but honestly…they give us a lot of design anxiety.  (Yes, that’s a thing…at least for us. Haha) Which piece goes with which? Should our frames match or all be different? Is the color story clear? Maybe down the road, we’ll experiment with a gallery wall again, but for the dining room we decided to go with one large piece of art work.  We felt this was the simpler route and made more sense for our small space, while still making a statement. Our living room, kitchen, and dining room are all open to each other, so we wanted to make sure we chose a piece that flowed well with the living room and accents in the kitchen.  After searching on Minted under different filters, colors, sizes, and shapes, we decided on this pretty landscape. We loved the neutral palette and the calmness of it.  It’s been so nice to sit at the table in the morning, still a little sleepy eyed, over a cup of coffee and glance over at it.  It’s definitely a nice way to start each day.  This little dining room of ours still needs some love (still on the hunt for an area rug and some other accents), but we definitely feel like it’s starting to come together. Below we put together a round-up of some of our favorite large scale art pieces.  The Italian coast line print was a close runner-up. 😉

Living Room Makeover with West Elm

New Darlings - Living Room

We are so excited to finally share our living room makeover! We’ve been working with the amazing team at West Elm, since May, designing our new space.  For us, the living room is one of our most used rooms in our home.  It’s where we hang out with friends, have movie nights, spontaneous dance parties, and binge watch Netflix.  We knew that moving in to the location that we’re in meant sacrificing a bit of space.  This living room is a little smaller than our last (see our first apartment here), measuring about 10 x 12 feet.  After going back and forth a bit and weighing out all of our options, we decided to start from scratch and create the living room we always dreamed of.  We loved each of the pieces in our old place individually, however it never truly felt like it all came together for us.  So we sold some of our old furniture, gave a few pieces away to friends to enjoy, and started with a clean slate.

We really wanted our new space to feel fresh and airy, yet still cozy and inviting.  Since moving out west, we have been so inspired by the desert boho style and all the neutral tones.  We definitely embraced that with with this room, bringing in a lot of wood furniture and plant life.  We’ve always been big fans of 50s and 60s furniture design and of West Elm’s mid century line (we have it in our bedroom and spare room/office) so we figured we why not incorporate it into the living room as well?  We chose an indigo blue as the accent color, bringing in various shades, to keep an organic and earthy feel.

After a few ideas for above the sofa went sour, we had the idea of creating these floating wooden shelves.  We wanted something just simple and clean to hold some of our favorite treasures. Luckily two of our best friends, Cody and Andrew, (owners of The Perspective Shop — coming soon) are super creative, so we recruited them to help us. Even though we had to drill into brick, it turned out to be a lot easier than we thought.  With just one plank of wood, some stain and sandpaper, we were in business in just a few hours! We brought along our ‘War Is Over’ print from our old place and filled our shelves with candles, keepsakes, and of course a plant or two.

New Darlings Living RoomWall Hanging ArtThis wall hanging piece was actually the last piece we added to the room.  We usually keep things pretty minimal, but felt that corner needed an extra “something”, so we quickly whipped up this wall art and are so happy we did! We love the texture it adds to the space, with the cotton piping and brass bells.  It’s quickly become one of our favorites and has inspired us to create more pieces for our home. Cue the DIY posts! 😉

New Darlings - PolaroidsMid Century Coffee Table & Printed RugWest Elm kilim rug, coffee table and basket tray | Kinfolk magazines

We really wanted to make sure that anywhere we looked in the room, was a piece we loved or that brought joy.  The room is full of some of our favorite books, meaningful postcards and notes, and little souvenirs we’ve picked up along the way. We decided to fill the terrarium on the coffee table with our polaroids.  It’s a fun alternative to traditional picture frames and is always a conversation starter when friends are over.

New Darlings - Living RoomNew Darlings - Living RoomOne of the things we were immediately drawn to with this place was the great light that pours in.  Our living room and bedroom both have these huge floor to celling windows that let in the most beautiful sunshine throughout the day, so we wanted to take full advantage of it and create a plant wall.  We’re constantly visiting our local nursery and bringing home new plant babies. There’s just something about having plants in our home that makes the space feel full of life and warmth.  Together with Cody and Andrew, we made these hanging shelves to create homes for some of our plants.  We love the varying heights of the shelves mixed in with our floor plants.

This leather accent chair is one of our favorite pieces in the room.  Its mid century design immediately drew us in and we love how the black leather creates a nice contrast to the tan and wood pieces in the room.  Although we didn’t have too many options with how the room was laid out, we are pretty happy with its placement in relation to the couch.  It really creates a good flow when entertaining.

We’ve been in our new home for about a month and a half now and it feels so good to have this room complete.  In the past, we would constantly be moving furniture around, switching out accent pieces, and changing color palettes, but we’re happy to say we haven’t had that urge with this room.  We can’t wait to share this space with family and friends!

Last weekend was pretty busy.  We met up with some friends for breakfast on Saturday morning, caught up on life, and discussed some future projects.  Then we all headed over to the West Elm Summer Sizzle Pop Up Shop in Scottsdale.  A few of our friends set up shop there for the day, so we stopped in to see them and some other local artists.  It’s always a treat to stop in to these West Elm events.  We love how they support smaller, local businesses and welcome them in.  We spent the rest of Saturday and most of Sunday wrapping up a little project we’ve been working on, since May.  We can’t wait to share it all next week! We’re so excited!

This week we’re looking forward to getting some work done and enjoying some time in our new home.  We’ve been out and about so much lately that it feels like we haven’t had time to really appreciate the space.  We’re thankful to be so close to so many great shops and restaurants but this week we’re looking forward to just laying low, cooking some meals at home, and cuddling up on the couch.

Hope everyone has a great week!
