Mornings in the Guest House + Life Updates

May 30, 2018 | By New Darlings

Since moving into the guest house a few weeks ago, we have noticed our morning routine has changed a bit…and I think for the better! As you might remember from this post a while back, Rob has always been the early riser over here, I on the other hand can motivate myself to get up and going early but it usually required a lot more effort. I never really woke up, ready for the day, ready to “conquer it all”. 😉 I’m not quite sure what kickstarted this shift in us lately, but over the last few weeks we’ve noticed some healthy changes and it feels good to finally see ourselves following through with them verses just talking about them.

Over the last few weeks, one of the biggest changes we made was joining a gym. We used to have a pilates membership, but ultimately the repetitious classes ended up losing their charm quickly, plus the class schedule just wasn’t the best for us. As much as we wanted to be pilates people, it didn’t stick. As we get older, we have become so much more focused on what we are doing for our bodies…what food are we consuming…are we active enough…etc. Since giving up red meat and pork a few years back, we were on a healthier track than the years before, but it still didn’t feel like enough. After our trip to London and Paris, we felt like we were bringing home a few extra pounds and more than anything, we just didn’t feel good…and that had little to do with vanity and all to do with our energy levels and how motivated we felt each day. When we’re not running around a new city, we spend a lot of time sitting at our computers, which is no bueno. That Apple Watch hints, “hey, its time to get up and get moving”….so in came the gym membership.

Tee (love this one too) | Bandana | Pants (similar in so many colors)

We find ourselves getting up earlier to head to the gym, so we can still make it home and eat breakfast at a normal hour together. What I love most about it…okay maybe not the most, but something I love about this new routine, other than getting to run and laugh my way though pathetic burpees next to my significant other is we are up, showered and ready for the day muchhhh earlier than in the past…and (ready for this?) I’m excited about it! If you work from home, you know how easy it is to eat breakfast, check emails, take calls and get projects for the next week all planned out while never leaving your kitchen table, or even changing out of your pjs might I add. Yeah – we’ve all been there. While that is all fine and sometimes you really just need a lazy day like that, I finally feel energized and ready to tackle my to do list each day after getting a good work out in, and knowing that I’m doing something good for myself has been pretty enriching. However we are still in the early stages, so I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

Updates on living under 300 square feet? We thought it would be a lot harder than it has been so far. You tend to realize just what you really need each day, what you reach for, what you don’t even look for…you catch my drift. When we first moved into the guest house we brought so much with us, that we *thought* we would need….turns out, we haven’t needed it, so into our storage unit it has gone. It has been interesting to see how simple of a routine we keep and how satisfying that is for the both of us. Dinner at our little table each evening has turned into hours of conversations about our childhood and future plans. Life in the guest house, thus far, has been almost like moving in together all over again. It’s interesting to see how after fourteen years, we’re still asking each other questions, learning how to navigate through our ups and downs together, and discovering what motivates us to be good to ourselves and good to each other as partners.

I’m looking forward to the next few months of the renovation and living in this tiny house of ours. Also, just two more weeks of bootcamp for Henry — can’t wait to see that little cutie!

’til next time!

  1. Hi! Please share ….
What kind of boot camp is Henry attending, and what areas of training are his focus ….(think I recall leash pulling was one)? Our little mini Aussie girl could use a little time in charm school. 🌸
Thanks, and so enjoy your projects & posts!

  2. Love your guest house! Everything looks neat and tidy. You guys did a great job putting this guest house together.

  3. I met your blog on Instagram. Your pictures are beautiful and your house is beautiful and inspiring. Every detail enthralling. Sorry for the errors but I used Google Translate.

  4. First I just love you guys, been a huge fan for years! Second, your design aesthetic through your photos in general and plus every part of the home renovations is so inspiring! Super excited to see what you both come up with next. 🙂
I just wanted to say I really loved this post because it spoke to me. I’ve actually been working on a morning routine, I work from home myself, and I can’t agree more. It’s great to read how incorporating a morning routine works for others too.
    Keep up the amazing work!

  5. Hey Christina!

I am an artist here in Phx and would love to send y’all a gift for your new guest house or for the house after it’s renovated! I’ve painted some really cool desert scenes that I think y’all would really like 🙂 you can check them out at laurieanneart (dot) com. I’ve tried emailing y’all but it kept bouncing back so, shoot me an email bc id love to send y’all some original art for your new space!

  6. Loved reading this post! We’re currently living abroad in the smallest “one-room officetel,” and it’s literally a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom/living space all in one room. It certainly gives you perspective on what you really ‘need!’ x

  7. I just found you site and I love your style! I know this is way after the fact but I notice in your picture the light fixture above the table appears to have an opaque bulb rather than an Edison bulb. Is this the case?
