Home in the Desert

Nov 02, 2017 | By Robert

It always surprises us when people ask how long we’ve been living in Arizona and we say, “it’s been over four years now.”  As soon as those words leave our mouths, it’s usually followed by, “wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long already.”  At the same time, it feels like we’ve been here for decades.  Although the first 8 months were hard for us, it’s felt like home ever since.  At the end of that first year, we really found home here in the desert and we’re so grateful to have taken the chance on it. Since Christina’s sister Danielle, has been with us in Arizona the last several weeks, the self-reflection and looking back on our move has been at all time high.

We’re definitely not alone in our love for the mountains, the cactus, the hikes, the coffee, the food, and all the wonderful things Phoenix has to offer (here’s our guide to downtown Phoenix).  Our tight-knit group of friends here all feel the same way and it’s exciting that Danielle felt inspired to follow suit and make the move to find change.  There is something special and inspiring about this place.  We can’t ever fully explain it, but something in us definitely switched on as soon as we arrived here and we continue to find beauty in new places each year.

There is something about an Arizona sunset that makes us stop in our tracks anytime we have a good view of it…its calming yet exciting all at once. It forces us to stop and stare and remember why we came here to begin with.  Our relationship dates back to 2004, so most of our years together were spent in New York, but we didn’t become curious about the outdoors and traveling until our move across the country in 2013.  A lot of people ask us why we moved, how we made the career change, and how we landed on Arizona. We always tell people who are in a creative rut… don’t be afraid to shake up your life.  Go somewhere new.  Travel somewhere you’ve never been.  Force yourself to think and feel differently.  It worked for us, and we owe so much of it to this beautiful city.

  1. Thank you for this! My husband and I are feeling like we need a change (thinking of moving from the East Coast to Colorado), and when we talk about it I am always totally on board, and then I start to get more and more nervous about it. I”m a graphic designer so I especially feel as a creative that it would inspire something new and exciting with a big move to the West, but I just get so nervous 🙂 I really needed to hear that. Love your blog!! 🙂
