Our Master Bathroom: The Reveal

May 30, 2017 | By New Darlings

Minimal black and white subway tile bathroom with brass accentsWell here she is! Our brass and marble accented lady of a master bathroom.

Our two goals for this room were to modernize it while keeping the vintage feel, and maximize on space/storage. For us the layout was perfect and just needed some tweaking. Some pieces were bulky, there were half walls, extra trim around the tub, and old light fixtures. With the help of Wayfair’s Home Improvement section, a speedy contractor, and a bit of patience, we were able to create our dream bathroom without changing the footprint of the room.

Here’s a look at the color palette and textures we were working with above.

Floor Tile: This 8″ matte black hexagon stole our hearts and we love the contrast it creates with the white subway tile.

Tub: Why don’t we start with one of our favorite pieces in the room? This big soaker tub! For a while we were set on a clawfoot style, but we loved the clean and modern look of this one. It feels like it will remain pretty timeless regardless of how we mix up the accents down the line.

Tub and Shower Trim: We loved the brushed gold pieces that we used in hallway bath all too much not continue them in this room as well. As mentioned in a previous post, we were really set on Kohler’s Purist line, but they didn’t have the tub filler in the brushed gold, so we opted for a wall mount faucet.

Double Vanity: We used to very embarrassingly reenact a typical House Hunters’ scene, where the couple is bumping into each other saying how their bathroom is just “too small” and they need a double vanity to get ready in the morning. Well while the scene always looks ridiculous, it’s true. This double vanity has been a game changer. We opted for mirrors that weren’t medicine cabinets so all the drawers and cabinets have been amazing for endless storage. The marble top looks custom and well, we’re suckers for those soft close drawers. 😉
We spray painted the silver knobs that the vanity came with  to match the rest of the brass accents in the room. We had ordered separate ones but they didn’t line up with the predrilled cabinet holes. I know, I know…, but after giving the original knobs a few coats of spray paint, we were good to go. We were a little nervous about how well it would hold up, seeing as we use these cabinet and drawer pulls everyday, but so far so good. They haven’t chipped or shown any signs of wear.
Vanity tray & bath tray: Great for keeping everything within reach when getting ready or indulging in a relaxing bubble bath.

Faucets: We kept things cohesive with the shower head and continued the brushed gold here as well. We were even able to change out the sink drains, which just added to the custom feel.

Mirrors and lights: We decided to go for his & hers mirrors verse one large one. They’re simple and sleek with a touch of modern. We added a single brass scone above each mirror for a little spotlight. These have a glass hood which felt a little vintage to us.

Shower Door: Our contractor had the shower doors custom made at a local place here in Phoenix, but Wayfair has some similar frameless styles by Kohler on their site. You can view them here. This really allowed the bathroom and shower itself feel larger and brighter.

Shower Tile: We really had our hearts set on continuing the large black hex tiles in the shower, but given the size of the shower they weren’t able to be cut in a way that would allow for proper draining. We decided on a smaller white hex tile with dark grout to keep a clean and fresh look.

Subway Tile: There used to be square white tiles with a black tile border throughout the whole bathroom, but they were all different finishes, which wasn’t ideal for cleaning. We tiled half way up most of the walls and did floor to ceiling subway tile in the shower, with a little niche cut out. It’s the same tile we used in the kitchen.

Rug: A vintage find from one of our favorite Etsy shops, Old New House. It brings a bit of pattern and old charm to the room, while warming it up. Love this one too!

Stool: Perfect place to prop up your drink, lay your towels, or leave your wireless speaker while enjoying a long bath.

Towel Bar and Towel Ring: Hang some fluffy white towels, and pretend you’re at a spa. 😉 We mixed in a few Turkish styles too.

If you’ve been following along with us on this remodel, you might remember seeing the textured walls in the before and progress photos. We skim coated the entire house, which was superrrr messy, but really worth it in the end to create a smooth and fresh look.
