The Canyon Collection is here!

It’s here! It’s here! Our very first collection is now live! We are so excited to announce the launch of the Canyon Collection: a children’s capsule collection created in partnership with goumi. Goumi creates cozy, sustainable and functional essentials for your babe, toddler, and big kid. Plus, all of their products are made from organic cotton and bamboo. As a new mom, I immediately fell in the love with the company and I can’t wait to share all the little details, the vision behind the collection and all the steps we took to get here. I hope you love the collection as much as we do and these pieces bring you a bit of the desert magic we experience each day.

The vision behind the Canyon Collection

I’ve always loved to paint and draw. It’s something I’ve never really shared too much about here, but I stayed an extra year in college pursuing an art degree after completing my BA in Psychology and Education, because it was such a passion of mine. This collection has allowed me to dive back into it all and create something special to share with all of you and my family. Having the opportunity to create a collection inspired by our love for the desert and our little Oliver, has been so creatively rewarding and has fueled my soul more than I can ever describe. 

Arizona is dry and hot which results in some of the most beautiful colors: adobe, ochre, and sand. Red rocks, sun bleached grasses, and intensely rich skies. There is something magical about the desert and feeling so close to the earth. Children are born feeling this connection, as adults we sometimes need to be reminded to soak in the sunsets, smell the air after a desert rain and to play with the shadows. Thankfully we have our little adventurers to remind us to soak in the beauty of the landscape, dance barefoot, and never stop exploring.

Creating the Canyon Collection: New Darlings x Goumi

We started this journey together almost a year ago, planning and dreaming up the Canyon Collection. Since becoming a mom…well since I found out I was pregnant, Rob and I made a huge lifestyle shift. We started traveling less, reconnecting with our home here in the desert, and paid closer attention to the items we brought into our home, as well as what we put on our bodies. Suddenly, I was hyper-vigilant of all the chemicals in products and used in making our clothing. Like any parent, I wanted the best for my baby.

After meeting the goumi team in Palm Springs at Alt Summit in 2019 when I was pregnant (coincidentally our last trip), I fell in love with their spirit to bring women together and their commitment to the power of small. They reached out shortly after Oliver was born, about creating something special together. From the very start we had a similar vision, and they allowed me to take full creative reign, which I’ve been so appreciative of. Every night I would spend hours sketching on my iPad in bed (a favorite creative release for me), dreaming up color stories, and sketching out a potential “mom and me” piece to add to the collection. Through many emails, zoom meetings, phone calls, and sketches, narrowing down color swatches and tweaking shades and measurements so that colors and fits were just right: the Canyon Collection was born.

goumi is known for their jams/sleep gowns, alls, and big kids sets, which are incredibly soft and feel like your favorite vintage tee that has been washed “just” the right amount of times. It has been so special putting my own spin on their classic pieces, while introducing a new print and a few new product categories as well. When they asked me if I wanted to add anything new to the collection, I knew a versatile coat that would be great for layering was just what I wanted to concentrate on.

The Canyon Coat: Mama and Baby Matching Coats 

I’ve always been a fan of the 60s and 70s styles. I’ve mentioned some of my favorite style icons before, but Jane Birkin and Bob Dylan are some of the most inspiring for me. I love their effortless yet iconic looks, and a chore coat has always been a staple in my wardrobe. I love how Jane Birkin always looked so effortlessly cool with high waisted denim, a white teen, basket bag and oversized jacket. I mean, who doesn’t love that look? I wanted to create my own desert spin on the coat with a cotton canvas material in a natural hue that reminded me of the dusty Arizona trails and the adventures around every corner. With deep pockets, a longer length and no fuss material, this will definitely become a staple in your wardrobe. I love that goumi was able to make my vision come to life and in mini-form for your little adventurer, too. All the pockets, seams, and buttons are the same for the child sized coat, as it is on the adult coat. 

bibdanas + Cutting Down on Waste

Another exclusive addition to the Canyon Collection that is different than anything goumi has done before is the bibdana trio, that comes in the most beautiful desert hues: sand, ochre and adobe. Each one is reversible to the whimsical canyon print that I hand drew on the back, so you can mix and match with all of your kiddos’ outfits. Each one of these bibs is repurposed out of scrap material from the pajamas and sheet sets, to cut down on waste. When Oliver was itty bitty we always had a bibdana on him. He was such a big drooler – ha! Now I just love using them as a little accessory over a tee or over the goumi alls. 

Why we love Goumi

Since the beginning, goumi has contributed 10% of all their profits to lift our planet’s most vulnerable – helping rescued human trafficking victims stay rescued and giving preemie mitts to families in need in the NICU. The whole team has been instrumental in helping us gift back to local hospitals in our community, by connecting them with mask manufacturers to keep our frontlines safe during the COVID-19 outbreak. All around they are an incredible group of women who are committed to supporting and lifting up other females, especially as they enter into parenthood. I’m proud to have created this collection with them and share it with the world.

Currently the collection is exclusively available for purchase on goumi.com. We’ll be sharing some special highlights and behind the scenes on both @goumi and @newdarlings instagram accounts, so be sure to follow along there for all the fun stuff. The Canyon Collection is made up of 12 pieces, with everything for newborns to big kids up to 5T, along with nursery essentials: sheets, blankets and changing pad covers.
