What To Wear Hiking: A Casual Hiker’s Guide

NEW DARLINGS HIKING ESSENTIALS

We are most certainly not experienced hikers. In fact, before moving to Arizona in 2013, we had only been on one hike. It wasn’t until we really settled into our Arizona home that hiking became something we enjoyed doing. Now with Oliver, we see hiking in a completely different way. It isn’t strenuous or too demanding, but instead, we now find trails that are more about the views than the challenge. We love to see what he sees, and watch his eyes light up when he sees a saguaro towering over us. One thing that is so important when hitting a trail is what we are wearing. When you combine baby-wearing (or carrying) with the Phoenix heat, it’s so important to be comfortable and safe, so knowing what to throw on before heading out the door is key. Here are our picks for a casual hike, below.

Shoes: Try to find a lightweight option with good traction. The last thing we want to do while holding our baby is to lose our footing and slip on a rock, so it’s so important to have an outsole with a good, reliable grip. We both love Danner or Teva for a casual hike.

Hats: Anything with a wide brim is essential for the relentless, desert sunshine. In the summers, a straw hat is perfect and then we switch to felt (or a good ‘ol beanie) for the winter.

Shirts: A light colored, and light fabric top that is a little loose fitting would be our top pick. Here are our his and hers options.

Pants/Shorts: Comfortable shorts are my usual summer go-to. Christina loves leggings by girlfriend – so those are always her choice for shorts and activewear lately.

Outwear: I know you’re thinking that outerwear in the Phoenix summer sounds crazy, but June to September in Phoenix is monsoon season and you just might get poured on, so I suggest packing a light, waterproof jacket with a hood juuuuuust in case. Also, anything to keep your shoulder safe from the sun is a good choice. This is Christina’s pick for a lightweight layer while on the go.

Accessories: a small backpack, sunglasses, and a water bottle are always good to have with you while on a trail. Gotta stay hydrated! Also, Christina likes to wear Oliver while we’re walking about. We both love Ergobaby and use it every time we’re out and about, but we’ve been eyeing a baby backpack carrier for bigger hikes that take a bit longer. Bandanas: We’re all into bandanas over here as an extra layer: great to use as a mask or wipe your forehead. 😉

What about you guys? Have you been getting outdoors more lately?
