They say your home is a reflection of your mind, or at least that’s what I’ve heard. If your closet is a mess, chances are you’re feeling overwhelmed and just as scattered mentally and it’s manifesting as a physical reflection….or maybe you just need some really great organizational tools. Either way, when it came time to think of our closet build out, I knew I wanted to work with Container Store again. I wanted the closet for the new house to be organized and planned with intention, and be a bit pretty too. I’m so glad we chose the Avera Collection from the Container Store. It has a built-in look which is so gorgeous, along with the versatility to change things down the line, similar to the Elfa line, if we ever wanted to switch up shelving, hanging, etc.
Before I dive into all the details, here’s where we started. We planned for the space to be 7 ft by 26 ft. You may remember our closet build out/laundry room from our previous Tudor home with Container Store. It was a full build out and addition on the back of our cute 1930 Tudor. It was quite the space. This time around, we didn’t need to create such a large closet, as we have a separate laundry area (the last space had our washer and dryer within the closet) and we purged quite a bit before we moved. 7’x26′ is more than enough space.
Something I love about the back wood paneling and shelving is how custom it looks, but can easily be added to any space. Plus, the LED lighting to highlight my bags and boots makes the whole space feel very next level. I used the Cambridge collection with their linen boxes for storage with off season items, like shorts and basket bags for summer. The sweater boxes are lovely too because they have a clear front so you could see everything you have stored away. Plus, you can use them with any existing space or closet you have in your home, as with any of Container Store’s organization bins and baskets.
My husband loves the built-in cubbies for hat storage, along with the sweater boxes for out of season items. Having everything tucked away neatly but still in-sight has been a game changer for keeping things organized and accessible.
Having the built in vanity with a the push to open drawers for makeup, has been such a wonderful addition to the closet design and makes my mornings getting ready so enjoyable. It was the perfect use of space along the back wall, and I was super impressed how the Avera system fit seamlessly around the window in the closet, that frames the most perfect desert views. Atop the vanity I added Simple Human’s Touch Control Sensor Mirror, along with a few of my favorite treasures.
Here’s a look at the original closet design. The built in vanity was a last minute change and good example as to how it helps to live with a space for a bit. We originally had extra shelves under the window and it just wasn’t needed and that narrow wall to the left wasn’t being utilized. Adding shelving up to the ceiling and opening up the area to the left made more sense for our needs. Sometimes spaces need a little reworking.
The push to open drawers give everything a sleek look, and just as with the vanity, we used some organizational inserts for jewelry and sunglasses. Avera has deep multi-section trays to organize everything and anything and keep things tidy.

When I walk in the new space, I feel energized and excited to start the day. My husband and I both find ourselves getting ready for the day faster each morning because everything is so well organized, with the closet divided for each of us. The his and hers mirrors are a fun addition too. When things are beautiful and functional, it’s a win win in my book.
I’m thinking of adding a pretty hook to the right of the entryway above that ottoman there for robes. I will probable add another Virginia Sin hook like this one.
Even though I have worked with The Container Store in the past, I was really blown away with how well they utilized every inch of the closet. The shelves went all the way up to ceiling and were perfectly measured to fit sweater boxes on top, along with leaving wider spaces for larger items. I am on the shorter side, so they really made sure to organize things for me in such a way that my most reached for items were accessible for my 5ft frame. There is no wasted space, which was super important when designing a long narrow closet.
