Healthy Looking Hair Begins at the Scalp

New Darlings Lifestyle Blog Tips and Tricks for Thinning Hair

Ever since my sister graduated from the Aveda institute, Rob and I have both been hooked on their products…hair care, bath exfoliants, the list goes on. So when I was asked to try out their Invati System for thinning hair and partner with Aveda on this post, I jumped on the opportunity. Let me rewind a bit…

Holiday Hair with Aveda

We tend to fall into a routine when it comes to getting ready, go-to outfits, the usual hair style, the “what’s easy today” sort of thing, but in celebration of the holiday season we wanted to mix things up a bit! We have some fun holiday parties coming up, along with a NYE bash we’re looking forward to, so we were really excited to team up with Aveda to bring you guys some holiday looks.

My sister recently graduated from the Aveda institute in Florida, and has been sharing all the tips and tricks she’s learned over the course of the 13 months she studied there. Unfortunately we never got the opportunity to visit her school, but we recently visited Juut Salon here in Scottsdale and got a closer look at the Aveda process. It was really special getting to see everything she’s told us about and picture her in a similar space, styling and getting people ready for some big events. She’s talented that one. #Proudsistermoment! 😉

We spent the afternoon with the very skilled and kind, Molly and Amie. We tried out three looks for the ladies, that are surprisingly easy to recreate at home with just a few products, and a classic men’s style that’s perfect for everyday while still being polished for an evening out.

Top Knot Tutorial

NewDarlings-TopKnot
I get questions about my messy bun all the time on instagram, and have always been hesitant to do a tutorial.  It’s kind of a style that I just throw my hair into quickly when I don’t feel like really doing my hair, and it’s a little difficult to explain. However, with warmer days just around corner, it felt appropriate to finally break down this look.  As with any hair tutorial, the steps are going to vary with your hair length and thickness, so hopefully the steps below give you a starting point and you can fine-tune it from there. Healthy Hair with Moroccanoil

New Darlings - Moroccan Oil
Every season I like to switch up my hair routine a bit, especially during the winter months.  The cold air is harsh, the damp weather causes frizz, and it could feel like one bad hair day after another, where you continuously find yourself reaching for a hat.  Now a days there are so many hair products at our fingertips…oils, mousses, sprays, the list goes on. It’s hard to tell which ones are actually necessary and/or actually work. We shared a few of our hair favorites a while back, but with the new year upon us, it felt appropriate to share an updated list of our go-tos that come in handy with the change of season, as well as a few “holy grail” products too. MILK BRAIDS HOW TO

New Darlings - Milkbraids
You guys have been so sweet on instagram about different hairstyles I do, so I thought it was finally time I shared a little tutorial on one of my favorite (and easiest) hairstyles.  With the holidays right around the corner, we all could use a quick hairdo to get us out the door faster, while still looking pulled together.  I used to be intimidated by this hairstyle, but it has definitely become a go-to and is perfect for “second-day” hair. There’s a lot of hair tutorials floating around the internet, but I thought I’d share the approach that works best for me, and hopefully some of you as well. 🙂 READ MORE

Braids…the obsession continues!  From french braids and fishtails, to weaving ribbons and flowers through each strand, it’s a trend that just keeps growing. We’ve received a few emails and very sweet comments on instagram regarding hair care! We figured it was about time we share our favorite products, for both guys & gals!

Sulfate-free Shampoo & Conditioner: Shampoos & conditioners containing sulfate strip your hair of it’s natural oils, can irritate your scalp and cause frizziness.  Also, if you want to protect your color and/or hair treatment (such as keratin hair treatment) your stylist will suggest one of these shampoos & conditioners.  Burt’s Bees is a great go-to of ours.  Pureology is another favorite, but can be a bit pricey. (Amazon usually has good deals on buying both together at a discounted price.)

Hair Masks: Deep conditioning can help transform dry & damaged hair immensely! One of our favorite hair masks to do is a coconut oil treatment.  It’s 100% natural and organic and easy to find at your local food store.  Leave on for about two hours, while you clean the house or catch up Netflix! Another long time favorite is Macademia Natural Oil Deep Hair Repair Mask.  It smells amazing and makes your hair super soft! You can also use this in place of conditioner in the shower once a week.

-Brushes & Combs: All brushes are not created equal and our vanities drawers are filled with several!  Paddle brushes are great for blow drying long hair to get out moisture.  Then go over in sections with a round brush to create volume.

Protect: Before blow drying hair it’s important to use a hair protectant, especially if you’re going to go over it again later with a styling tool (like a straightener or curling wand).  The Moroccan Oil line is great for this.  Their protectant spray and volumizing mousse never fail!  You can also add a bit of their smoothing serum on the ends of your hair to help with split ends and create a sleek look! Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum is a great alternative, that will save you a few bucks. 🙂

Filtered Shower Head: Last but not least, invest in a filtered shower head! It’s one of the best things we did (for our hair, haha).  Once we moved to Arizona, we saw a big difference in our hair… it was definitely dryer, which led to more split ends.  We purchased a filtered shower head a while back and don’t know how we never used one before.  The filter removes up to 99% of chlorine and chemicals from your shower water and leaves our hair super soft & healthy!
