If you follow along with us oninstagram or snapchat, you’ve probably seen we just moved in to a new apartment! Slowly but surely, we’re getting settled in to our new place and are getting acquainted with the neighborhood. The last two weeks have been a little chaotic, so yesterday it was nice to get out and just have a coffee date. We threw on some favorite new threads from Bridge & Burn and out the door we went!
One of the things we love most about Phoenix is the abundance of coffee & tea shops. When we moved out of New York, everyone joked…”good luck finding good coffee…good bagels…good chinese food”. The list goes on! But there are so many great locally owned shops here and we can’t seem to get enough of them!
Yesterday we tried out Songbird Coffee & Tea House for the first time. The cute little yard in the front is so charming and the bright green accents really drew us in. We were pleasantly surprised with their abundant tea list, (which you don’t see too often) as most places only cater to coffee. Our drinks of choice were: jasmine green tea and a classic latte. Afterward, we walked around town a bit, as it was surprisingly comfortable out for summer in Phoenix. It was a pretty sweet little afternoon.
July will mark two years since our move to Phoenix, AZ! Right now, at this point in our lives, we really couldn’t imagine ourselves living anywhere else. It has been such a great transition for us from NY, and we still enjoy soaking up every bit this city has to offer us. The quiet desert landscape has been so refreshing, yet still has a bit of city life we adore. We’re always on the hunt for new places to explore, coffee shops to try out, and places to bring friends visiting from out of town. It’s been such a treat for us to have friends and family visit and show them some of the popular places around town and some hidden gems as well.
With some exciting trips coming up in the next few months, we’ve been following along with Jessica and Krissy of Tastebuds Travel. They have a YouTube show presented by Ford, where they travel to different cities across America and give everyone the inside scoop on some must-see local spots. We were inspired by these lovely ladies to share some of our favorite local spots in Phoenix with all of you! So if you find yourself in Phoenix one day and are looking for some places to check out in between swooning over all the mountain views and desert landscape, here’s some places that rank pretty high on our list.
– LUX CENTRAL Start off your morning in Central Phoenix by taking the light rail or biking to Lux Central. Grab a latte, green tea, or espresso shot…whatever it takes to lift those heavy eyelids and order yourself some breakfast. We usually like to keep things simple, grabbing a pastry or acai bowl with fresh fruit, but on the weekends we can’t resist their Farmer’s Market Scramble, with some bacon and hash browns on the side. At night Lux, has a full bar with some of the best bartenders around…friendly and creative with their spirits, they’ll mix you up a tasty and unique cocktail.
–MODERN MANOR Next up, time for some thrifting! Eames, Harry Bertoia, Arne Jacobson…is your heart fluttering yet?! It’s no secret we have a weakness for mid-century style furniture and pieces from the past. Modern Manor is hands down our favorite place to go treasure hunting in Phoenix. They have furniture, dinnerware, and decor pieces dating back to the 1940’s. We have literally spent hours in here, figuring out if we had room for another sofa or chair in our apartment, because we fall in love with every piece. Their pieces are in beautiful condition and the guys who run the place are pretty nice too, which never hurts! If you have a bit of a furniture addiction, the way we do, follow along with them on instagram. They update often with new arrivals!
– PIZZERIA BIANCO + HERITAGE SQUARE Voted the best pizza in Phoenix, Pizzeria Bianco will surely satisfy your pizza craving. Moving to Phoenix from NY, good pizza was something we were immediately on the hunt for. The thin crust and their charming patio with lights strung from above gets us every time. This is one of our favorite places to go on a date-night. If you don’t want to take our word for it, even Jimmy Fallon loves it. It’s located in Heritage Square, which has been around since the late 1800’s. The cobblestone streets and beautiful buildings will make you feel like you’ve stepped into the Victorian era.
Check out Tastebuds’ latest episode, presented by Ford, on their trip to Austin. This definitely got us in the mood to plan a trip to a new city! We’d love to hear about some favorite places in your own home towns. Share them with us in the comments!
We arrived early on, but it seemed the party was already in full swing, with sweet treats being served, glasses being raised in “cheers”, and some shopping going on, all with some great music spinning in the background (Best Coast remixes? Yes please!). The store looked amazing, with every new handbag and sandal style in stock (my weakness). It was so fun to meet the staff and chat with everyone there. We really enjoyed hearing about all the current concepts and seeing the new spring & summer trends.
Here are some top picks from their new collection that I can’t seem to take my eyes off of:
We will be hosting an Etsy Pop-Up Shop on Saturday March 28th at west elm Scottsdale here in AZ! The event will take place from 1:00-6:00pm. There will also be some amazing local donuts served by Welcome Chicken + Donuts, so if you have trouble resisting baked goods (like we do), RSVP here and please join us!
west elm and Etsy…together!? It’s like a dream come true! We’ve always been fans of west elm’s designs and home esthetic and then throw Etsy into the mix, it’s perfect! We spend way too many nights searching through Etsy’s unique and one of a kind pieces. We’re so excited to be working with so many local creatives in the community. We started planning the event with west elm back in January and we can’t believe it’s now just a few days away!
We hand-picked ten of our favorite local Etsy sellers who will be setting up at west elm to share and sell their artwork, home goods, and more! Here’s a little sneak peek at some of our favorites that you’ll find at the pop-up shop.
You can read more about the event and the artists, on the west elm blog. Be sure to RSVP on west elm’s Facebook page. Spread the word, bring your friends, and snack with us while we all help support local artists! Hope to see you all there! 🙂
Chicken and doughnuts; not a combo we would initially crave together, but the other day we tried out this new place in Phoenix and we are now hooked! The owners of the Welcome Diner, opened up Welcome Chicken + Donutsnot too long ago, and since we are such big fans of the Welcome Diner (If you are in Phoenix, you need to go! Amazing burgers!) we figured we needed to see what this place as all about. The place has an old school vibe, with some fun oldies playing over the speakers, which is perfect for munching on some afternoon snacks. We got the Korean Chili chicken with an array of doughnuts to try out. The Korean Chili flavor isn’t something we would normally choose, but we were told it was their most popular and it was definitely the right choice! Crunchy with a little kick and then add in the doughnuts! We were in heaven. Who doesn’t love an afternoon date with their love…and doughnuts?!
Our friends, Kelli and Tyler recently opened their own gallery space, Moonage, here in Tempe, AZ. It’s been a dream of theirs to own their own shop and create a place for local artists to display and sell their work. Yesterday we finally had the chance to check out the finished space and take a few photos, of course! They have such an array of art pieces, from amazing paintings & prints to the cutest little terrariums and unique jewelry pieces. We had so much fun trying on all the pieces and chatting with Kelli and Tyler about their new venture! They are so dedicated to bringing the local art community together and that is definitely something we can get behind. Oh, and if you love David Bowie as much as we do, you’ll definitely need to check out their amazing selection of Bowie paintings!
We’re happy to announce that on Sunday, December 14th, we will be hosting a holiday fundraiser at Moonage from 1-4pm. When Kelli and Tyler asked if we would like to host an event at their new space, we immediately began talking about a holiday fundraiser. It is something we have always been passionate about and are so excited to finally see it all come together.
We have teamed up with Tempe Community Action Food Bank to spread some holiday cheer. There will be local artist giveaways, food and entertainment, all celebrating and giving back to the community. Bring 5 canned and/or non-perishable food items to be entered in raffles with some amazing giveaways by featured artists! Please spread the word, bring a friend and help brighten some hearts this holiday season! For more info & to RSVP to the event, click here and follow along with Moonage on instagram.
Moonage is located at 1020 S. Mill Ave Suite C in Tempe, AZ 85281
Since moving to Arizona, we’ve gotten a little bit more adventurous–challenged ourselves and haven’t second guessed everything as much. We’ve become more in touch with nature and all the beauty this place has to offer. About a week ago, we went canoeing! It may not be that crazy to some, but neither of us had ever been before and we were beyond excited to try it out. It was a little scary at first, getting out onto the water–pushing the canoe in, paddling away from the land, and feeling the slight current take us. It took a little while to get the hang of it, and find our balance, but once we did, we didn’t want to get out! This state was the perfect backdrop for our first time canoeing–the mountains surrounding us, a little bit of a breeze coming off the water, and the ever so delicate peacefulness. It truly was a dream of a morning!
Temperatures are beginning to drop a bit here in Arizona. The nights are getting a bit cooler and we are definitely not complaining! Our friend, Kammie, brought us out to this beautiful woodsy spot with a gorgeous mountain view the other day. It definitely got us in the fall spirit. Arizona has been getting hit hard with many rain storms as of late. We normally don’t see these sort of weather conditions around here, but we can’t help but embrace it. We’ve been burning this amazing Mandarin candle from Urban Outfitters daily, cuddling up in cozy sweaters and, drinking lots of chai tea. Fall, we’re definitely ready for ya!
Back in May, we had the pleasure of meeting up with Matt Scorte. For months we had been exchanging emails back and forth, talking about our creative goals, movies that inspire us and projects we want to work on. When Matt told us he would be coming to Arizona for a visit, we were looking forward to chatting a bit. We showed him around some of our favorite places, grabbed coffee and talked about our families & friends. It was so nice to meet another creative who is just all around a nice and genuine person. We couldn’t be more grateful for the amazing people we have met and now call our friends.
Thanks Matt for these lovely photos. We will definitely cherish these for years to come. Be sure to check out Matt’s VSCO grid to see some more of his work.
A year has passed since we moved from New York to Phoenix. We never thought we’d embrace Arizona so quickly. Last summer, on the fourth of July, we hopped on a plane at JFK airport, with our one-way tickets in hand and headed west. We had no idea what to expect and it was such an exciting feeling. We had only been to Arizona twice before moving here, but we were ready for a change, an adventure and we knew we could do it together.
When our friend Jaci suggested shooting some photos around Phoenix, we knew we had to brave the heat and make it happen. This is our new home…our new city. It was celebratory in a sense. When we look back at these photos, we will always think of our first year of marriage in a city we’re beginning to call our own.
We are Robert and Christina: husband and wife, photo takers, adventurers and best friends. We like to laugh too hard, dance all night, and explore together. Here is a little glimpse into our lives in sunny Phoenix, Arizona.
