Top Knot Tutorial

NewDarlings-TopKnot
I get questions about my messy bun all the time on instagram, and have always been hesitant to do a tutorial.  It’s kind of a style that I just throw my hair into quickly when I don’t feel like really doing my hair, and it’s a little difficult to explain. However, with warmer days just around corner, it felt appropriate to finally break down this look.  As with any hair tutorial, the steps are going to vary with your hair length and thickness, so hopefully the steps below give you a starting point and you can fine-tune it from there.
NEW DARLINGS-TOPKNOT
What you’ll need: one elastic hair tiebobby pinshair spray. This style works best on second-day hair, but you can always add a bit of texturing spray if you’re doing it on freshly washed hair.

Step 1: Start by making a high pony tail, on the top of your head. If you have bangs, section those off, along with some fly away pieces to frame your face.

Step 2: Only pull your hair fully through the hair tie once. (This will depend on the thickness of your hair. Doing it this way, will keep the bun loose and give you room to pull pieces in the end to create fullness.)

Step 3: Half way through the second wrap around, only pull the pony tail through half way.  Keep your hands in position for the next step — don’t let go of the hair tie.

Step 4: With your hands still in position and hair pulled half way through the hair tie, pull the hair tie around the remaining hair sticking out and bun.  At this point, it will most likely look like a mess — don’t worry.  The next steps are all about fine tuning it. 😉

Step 5: So now you have this little bun on your head with half the hair from your pony tail sticking out. Kind of funny, right?

Step 6: The bun/half pony tail part, somewhat resembles a fan right about now.  Pull the sides of your fan-like bun down to your head, we’re gonna pin those down in a minute. This is the step where I really like to pull the bun apart and make it look full.

Step 7: Pin down the sides of the bun, along with the rest of the hair from earlier.  There’s really no right or wrong way to do this part, and every time it’s a bit different.  You can pin the pieces in front, or pull some to the back.  They will probably be all different lengths, depending on how you pulled apart the top part of the bun. I also like to “anchor” the bun in the back with some bobby-pins.  This just keeps the height and full look throughout the day.

Step 8: Add a little hair spray and you’re ready to go!

Hope this was helpful! Please let us know if there’s anything else/other styles you’d like to see. :)

What’s in my bag: His + Hers Edition

New Darlings - In my Bag - His + Hers
Lately it feels like we’re always on the go…and we’re definitely not complaining about it. 🙂 With each new trip or busy day, we’re becoming a little smarter about what we really need to be carrying around with us or traveling with.  We each have our go-to bags that we grab each morning while running out the door, with a few essentials.   Although, we both seem to gravitate toward bigger bags, we try not to stuff them to capacity…we try our best to avoid any shoulder injuries and that whole black hole affect that we’ve all experienced at one point or another.  We’re not trying to be Mary Poppins here. 😉

We’ve never shared a “what’s in my bag” post before and thought it would be fun to do a “his + hers” take on it, as we recently teamed up with Vaseline for the launch of their new lip tins.  Vaseline has always been a skin care favorite of ours…life saver for dry heels and elbows…lip moisturizer…I even put some on my lashes at night. It’s one of the oldest, all-purpose, secret weapons around.  We were pretty excited about the new lip tins, which were inspired by the original packaging from the 1880’s, and are perfect for on the go! So, here’s a little round up of what you can find in our bags…

NewDarlings - What's in my bag - His + Hers

-SUNGLASSES: Arizona is sunny — there’s no denying that and with summer around the corner, a good pair of sunglasses is a must.  Classic club masters are always a great go-to style.  These tortoise frames are also a favorite from Madewell.

-PHONE: Okay, so no explanation needed — we’re probably not alone when we say we’ve turned the car around once or twice when leaving it home by accident. Everything is on there! We’re guilty of having matching phone cases, each bought for each other as Christmas gifts one year.

-COMB: It’s always handy to keep a comb in your bag for touch ups throughout the day, and it takes up less room than a clunky brush. 🙂

NewDarlings - What's in my bag - His + Hers
J.Crew bucket bag

-GLASSES: In addition to sunnies, regular glasses are needed over here too! Lately, I’ve been wearing the Durand frames by Warby Parker.

-PHOTOS: Polaroids always end up in our bags and wallets.  They’re sweet little reminders to find throughout the day.

-WALLET: Another obvious one! We use simple leather ones (his and hers) that have lasted a quite a while now.  The distressing over the years has only added some character to them.

NewDarlings - What's in my bag - His + Hers
camera bag c/o ONA bags

-CAMERA: We’ve always carried around a camera with us, since back in our dating days with a point and shoot SONY. We currently use a Canon Rebel t5i and shoot mostly on a 50mm lens.

-NOTEBOOK + PENS/PENCILS: We’re always sketching or jotting things down in a notebook, and updating things in our planner.  It’s amazing how you can sync everything across all your devices now-a-days: iPads, iPhones, iMacs…but there’s something about writing everything down that has always stuck with us.

-KEYS: …you won’t get far without them. 😉 The leather key ring above was a recent purchase from J.Crew.

NewDarlings - What's in my bag - His + Hers

-MAKE-UP: Dual-compacts are great for space savers.  This bronzer/blush duo from Nars is a favorite go-to, and it has a mirror, which is always a plus!

-LIP BALM: The Vaseline lip therapy tins have been great for throwing in our bags and fighting chapped lips, especially with the change in season. The original and aloe are our current favorites. The rosy lips one is really nice too — it has a pretty pink tint with a bit of gloss, and a light rose scent.

-HAIR CLIPS: Bobby-pinshair tieshairpins – these are always found at the botton of the bag and it seems like you can never have too many with you, because somehow they always magically vanish.

What are some of your bag essentials?

Healthy Hair with Moroccanoil

New Darlings - Moroccan Oil
Every season I like to switch up my hair routine a bit, especially during the winter months.  The cold air is harsh, the damp weather causes frizz, and it could feel like one bad hair day after another, where you continuously find yourself reaching for a hat.  Now a days there are so many hair products at our fingertips…oils, mousses, sprays, the list goes on. It’s hard to tell which ones are actually necessary and/or actually work. We shared a few of our hair favorites a while back, but with the new year upon us, it felt appropriate to share an updated list of our go-tos that come in handy with the change of season, as well as a few “holy grail” products too.

My hair is super curly naturally, which means to get loose curls like I usually style, a lot of heat is applied to my hair.  First, I blow dry it straight, then curl my hair with a large curling wand.  All the heat isn’t the best thing for my hair, but over time I’ve found a few go-to products and treatments that still keep it shiny and healthy.

New Darlings - Moroccan OilTo start, I only wash my hair every two days. This is for two reasons…one: I am a tad bit too lazy to blow dry and style it everyday, and two: the more you shampoo your hair, you strip away the healthy oils from your scalp. In between washes I use a dry shampoo.  I just spray a little bit on my roots before bed and in the morning for a little refresher.  Before blow drying and styling, I add a few drops of Moroccanoil Treatment, which  is infused with argan oil, to the ends of my hair to fight off any split ends and add shine. I’ve discovered the benefits of argan oil in general.  Pure Argan Oil has been a great multi-purpose product during the winter months. You can use it on your face, hands, and legs too.

Next I add a dime sized amount of Moroccanoil thickening lotion to the roots of my hair.  This has been one of my favorite volumizing products…it smells so good and a little bit goes a long way! My hair has gotten a little thinner over the years and this definitely helps with making it look full.

Once a week I like to do a hair mask, to reverse any damage from styling.  This hydrating mask is always a good go-to.  I leave it on for about 20 minutes while I fold laundry or watch a quick episode on Netflix. Rob loves it too. Can anyone say, “hair mask party?!” 😉 When it’s time to rinse I use cool water to seal the cuticle and avoid any frizz.

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year…there’s no denying that, but they can also be the craziest time of year.  Luckily we haven’t had anyone setting the christmas tree on fire or electricuting the cat, like the Griswolds in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, but from last minute gifts to preparing a big meal, it’s definitely easy to get overwhelmed. We recently put together a little holiday survival kit with Hanes, to get you through this busy season, stay relaxed and prepped for all the holiday parties. Hanes-NewDarlings-Holiday Survival Kit

FOR HER

Mini Baby PowderBaby powder is such a great multi-purpose beauty product.  It’s obviously nice for after showers and baths, but its perfect to freshen up your hair and skin too.  Kind of like a dry shampoo and shine powder in one. Plus it smells great.

Red Lipstick: Mac’s “Russian Red” and Kat Von D’s “Outlaw” are great festive shades that last all day.

Tights: Black tights and a printed dress is always a fool-proof holiday look.  Around this time of year, you can’t go wrong with sheer styles to complete an outfit; these from Hanes are a long time favorite.

NuMe Curling Wand: The best curling wand, hands down.  The largest barrel is great for creating, soft, loose curls with big volume.

New Darlings - Holiday Survival Guide with Hanes

FOR HIM

Cologne: Some favorites that are always on rotation are Commodity Goods’ Wool scent and “L’Homme” by YSL.

Watch: Be on time for all the holiday parties with a classic time piece. The Metropolitan from Timex is pretty cool. It has built in bluetooth, calories and steps trackers, and also syncs to your phone.  We’ve been having fun playing around with it.

Comb: Always keep your hair in place with a good quality comb.  There are so many beautifully crafted ones that fit in your pocket, while you’re on the go. We have a few of these Kent combs that have lasted for years.

Festive PJsComfy PJs to curl up by the fire with while watching a holiday movie and a hot cocoa in hand is the best.  You really can’t go wrong with anything plaid this time of year.

MILK BRAIDS HOW TO

New Darlings - Milkbraids
You guys have been so sweet on instagram about different hairstyles I do, so I thought it was finally time I shared a little tutorial on one of my favorite (and easiest) hairstyles.  With the holidays right around the corner, we all could use a quick hairdo to get us out the door faster, while still looking pulled together.  I used to be intimidated by this hairstyle, but it has definitely become a go-to and is perfect for “second-day” hair. There’s a lot of hair tutorials floating around the internet, but I thought I’d share the approach that works best for me, and hopefully some of you as well. 🙂

NEW DARLINGS-MILKBRAIDS

What you’ll need: elastic hair ties, bobby pins, hair spray

Step 1: Separate your hair into two equal sections. I like to just do this with my fingers verses a comb, to avoid a harsh looking part.

Step 2: Start to braid your hair loosely and secure with a small elastic tie.  I like to put the hair in front my ear and start the braid pretty low down.  I’ve found that if you start too high up and braid too tightly, it makes the next few steps a bit harder.

Step 3: Repeat the braid on the other side and pull out strands/whispy pieces to frame your face (if desired).  This gives the style an overall softer look.  I find it easier to pull out these little pieces early on, rather than when everything is already bobbi-pinned.

Step 4: Once both sides are braided, lightly pull them apart starting at the top, working your way down.  This creates fuller looking braids.

Steps 5 and 6: Wrap around one braid at a time, pulling it up from your ear and then around the crown of your head.  Where the braids lay will be different for each person depending on the length of their hair.  I like to pull mine over and rest them right above where my bangs start on top of my head.  I’ve seen other people do this a little more forward on their forehead, too. Once you get it in position, pin with bobby pins.

Step 7: Repeat steps 5 and 6 with your other braid, wrapping it toward the front of your head.  Don’t forget to tuck in the ends (where your elastic ties show) under your other braid.

Step 8: Add a little hair spray and you’re ready to go!

Hope this was helpful! Please let us know if there’s anything else/other styles you’d like to see. 🙂

Soft and smooth skin

method - NewDarlingsmethod - New Darlings method-NewDarlings-02method-NewDarlings-04method - New DarlingsWe’re so excited to be working with method to help spread the word about their new foaming body wash.  We’ve been big fans of method’s home cleaning line for quite some time now.  Their products are all naturally derived and never tested on animals which is a big plus for us.  So we were pretty pumped to learn about the launch of their new body wash…which is foaming! Who doesn’t love some (okay, A LOT of) foam and bubbles?! 😉

We’ve shared a bit of our skincare favorites in the past, but we mostly concentrated on our favorites for your face…cleansers, moisturizers, etc… So we thought it could be fun to pull back that shower curtain and share some our favorite full body skin-care tips

EXFOLIATE
We’ve recently discovered the benefits of dry body brushing and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like…you brush your body with a dry brush before showering. It’s a great way to increase energy and blood flow, while also removing toxins and dead skin cells.  It takes just a few minutes before jumping in the shower.  Follow up with a moisturizing body wash and natural lotion afterwards.

CLEANSE + MOISTURIZE
Lately, our go-to has been method’s cucumber mint scent body wash, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them.  The fragrances are all so fresh and infused with aloe and vitamin E, which really helps if you’re a desert dweller like we are.  Since moving out west, our skin (and hair) has gone through many changes.  We were used to the humidity of the east coast, which wasn’t so fun with frizzy hair days but definitely made a difference in our skins’ texture and moisture.  We’ve learned body washes and lotions with extra vitamins, has been the key to keeping our skin moisturized and soft.  No dry patches here!

HYDRATE
This may sound like a given, but drinking a lot of water (about 2 liters per day) is one of the best  things we can do for our skin. It’s something we all know and hear constantly, but can be hard to do throughout our busy days.  We like to start off our mornings with a cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice.  It helps kick start the digestion system for the day and is really refreshing.  We always keep a water bottle with us on while we’re on the go, especially during the summer months, when the desert heat is at an all time high.

How do you guys keep your skin looking and feeling beautiful?

Skin Care Essentials

NewDarlings-SkinCare New Darlings - Skin CareNew Darlings - Skin CareNew Darlings -Skin Care

We often change up our skin care routine, guilty of always getting sucked in to a new product or regimen.  However, we always find ourselves going back to the same few products that work best.  Everyone has different skin care needs and skin types, so what works for us may not be the best fit for you, but we figured we’d share some of our favorites.

Cleanse: We like to keep things simple as far as cleansers go. A few months ago we tried out Lush products for the first time (we know, we know…what took us so long, right?!) and became immediately obsessed.  Fresh Farmacy has been our go-to by them. Its very gentle and soothing with ingredients like calamine, chamomile, and elderflower.

Deep Clean + Exfoliate: The Spin for Perfect Skin brush has helped to keep our skin clear of any blemishes and black heads.  With the occasional pimple here and there this has been a lifesaver.  It has different brushes, one for normal use, one for exfoliating and even a body brush. This has recently made its way into our daily morning routine. Use code: “XONEWDARLINGS’ for 70% off all face and body brushes by Vanity Planet.

Moisturize: We’ve tried a TON of moisturizers, but we always find our way back to Burt’s Bees Daily Moisturizing Cream for sensitive skin. It’s all natural and doesn’t clog our pores. As far as eye creams go, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair is an all time favorite. Dab a little around your eye area before bed to fight any signs of wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles. A little goes a long way! Vaseline is also a great moisturizer for dry skin and lips.  We use a little as a lip  every night.  You can even add a bit to your lashes after you take your makeup off, to keep your lashes strong and long.

For the Gentleman: So, we both share all the skincare items listed above.  Yes, it comes as no surprise that men can use wrinkle eye creams and pink facial cleansers too, but you can’t forget to take care of the beard! There are so many beard oils and lotions on the market. Honest Amish Beard Balm is a great all natural and organic leave-in conditioner with a great woodsy smell!

Problem Areas: The down side to having very sensitive and fair skin, is that even the smallest blemish leaves a mark or scar. Keihl’s Dark Spot Solution has hands down been the best product to fade those marks.  A little bit in the morning and night, is all you need. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but lasts such a long time! It also comes in a nice glass bottle and who doesn’t love pretty packaging?

Do you have any skincare items you can’t live without?

Everyday Make-Up Essentials

NEW DARLINGS-MAKEUP FAVORITES

Thought it was about time to share some favorite make-up essentials.  Below are some of my every-day go to’s for a soft and feminine look.

Estee Lauder ‘Double Wear Light’ Stay-in-Place Makeup – Love this for full, long lasting coverage that still feels light, without clogging pores or acne-prone skin.

Beauty Blender – Great for applying liquid foundation and makes a little bit of product go a long way.

Nars Blush and Bronzer Duo – Comes with bright pink blush in “Orgasm” and bronzing powder in “Laguna“, which is great for contouring. Love that the blush has a bit of shimmer to it, so there’s no need for a separate highlighter.  When using matte blushes, Mineralize Skinfinish by Mac in “Soft and Gentle” is a great choice for highlighting the tops of cheekbones and the bridge of your nose.

Mac 150 Brush – Big fluffy brush perfect for blush and/or applying setting powder.

Dior “Diorshow” Mascara – This is best mascara hands down! The brush is huge and gives great volume and length.

Naked Basics Eyeshadow Palette – This palette is full of neutral matte tones that are perfect for everyday wear. Love using the color “Crave” as an eye liner and “Venus” for highlighting the brow bone and inner corners of the eye for a bigger, brighter look.

Mac 266 Angle Brush – Use this to tight line your lids with a dark shadow or potted liner.  Perfect for filling in brows too!

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Roman Holiday” & Dior ‘Addict’ Gloss in “Bed Roses” – Fun everyday pink shades that are perfect for spring and keep your lips moisturized all day!

Hair Essentials

We’ve received a few emails and very sweet comments on instagram regarding hair care! We figured it was about time we share our favorite products, for both guys & gals!

Sulfate-free Shampoo & Conditioner: Shampoos & conditioners containing sulfate strip your hair of it’s natural oils, can irritate your scalp and cause frizziness.  Also, if you want to protect your color and/or hair treatment (such as keratin hair treatment) your stylist will suggest one of these shampoos & conditioners.  Burt’s Bees is a great go-to of ours.  Pureology is another favorite, but can be a bit pricey. (Amazon usually has good deals on buying both together at a discounted price.)

Hair Masks: Deep conditioning can help transform dry & damaged hair immensely! One of our favorite hair masks to do is a coconut oil treatment.  It’s 100% natural and organic and easy to find at your local food store.  Leave on for about two hours, while you clean the house or catch up Netflix! Another long time favorite is Macademia Natural Oil Deep Hair Repair Mask.  It smells amazing and makes your hair super soft! You can also use this in place of conditioner in the shower once a week.

-Brushes & Combs: All brushes are not created equal and our vanities drawers are filled with several!  Paddle brushes are great for blow drying long hair to get out moisture.  Then go over in sections with a round brush to create volume.

Protect: Before blow drying hair it’s important to use a hair protectant, especially if you’re going to go over it again later with a styling tool (like a straightener or curling wand).  The Moroccan Oil line is great for this.  Their protectant spray and volumizing mousse never fail!  You can also add a bit of their smoothing serum on the ends of your hair to help with split ends and create a sleek look! Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum is a great alternative, that will save you a few bucks. 🙂

Filtered Shower Head: Last but not least, invest in a filtered shower head! It’s one of the best things we did (for our hair, haha).  Once we moved to Arizona, we saw a big difference in our hair… it was definitely dryer, which led to more split ends.  We purchased a filtered shower head a while back and don’t know how we never used one before.  The filter removes up to 99% of chlorine and chemicals from your shower water and leaves our hair super soft & healthy!
