We’re Building a House in Tucson

Did you catch our most recent instagram video? If not, take a look below. We shared a little peek on the site of our land where we will be building our family home in Tucson. We are so excited to embark on this journey. The land is a big reason as to why we decided to move to Tucson, along with the rich history. It is a special two acre lot in West Tucson surrounded by towering saguaros with the most perfect sunset views. One acre is (about) ready to build on and the other acre goes up into these incredible peeks. After the house takes shape and we work on the main living areas (interior and exterior), we will eventually carve out a trail for sunset hikes and maybe add a little studio space nestled between the huge ocotillos and saguaros, but for now we are focused on creating our dream home.

Designing a Modern Southwest Style Home

We have been working with an amazing team for the last year and a half now (Joel Contreras Design, Amy Williams, and Brock O’Neil), designing our future family home: Westward House. Westward House will be a two story modern southwest stye home, which will be methodically carved into the existing landscape. We have been carefully designing the home around the surrounding vegetation and are beyond excited to see it begin to take shape and break ground at the end of this month (September). The home will be roughly 3,000 sq ft, with terraces off the bedrooms to take in the views, garage, and ample outdoor space for gathering with friends and family. We had so much fun renovating our old Tudor home, but it has been so incredible designing a house from scratch while sourcing materials that will still bring a whole lotta soul and character to this place.

We will be working with the same builder, Rob Withem from Loyal Design Co., who did the renovation on our Tudor home. We built such a great relationship with him over the years, and works with Joel often, so it felt like a great match. Dig It Design has been so meticulous with us on the landscape design and we have some exciting stuff planned with them to share with you all. It’s important to us that this home is built in such a way that is respectful of the existing landscape and honors the magic of the desert.

We’re going to do a whole post on the inspiration and design process, but for now, I’ll leave you with a few images from our original mood board (above) to give you an idea with where we’re heading with this all.

Have any questions? Drop them below. Can’t wait to dive into this further with you all!
