The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

Oct 03, 2017 | By Christina

The Sublte Art of Not Giving a F*ck has gotten a lot of traction lately and we finally decided to look into the book ourselves. While this isn’t a review because we haven’t fully dived into it yet, after reading the synopsis and few pages, we knew it was a one we had to add to our Audible list.  When Rob and I started dating we spent a ton of time at the bookstore on the weekends, but the self development section wasn’t really an aisle I frequented often.

I touched upon it a bit in this post last week, but creating a happy and healthy environment despite what is thrown your way has so much to do with a healthy outlook on things and knowing yourself. The author Mark Manson says, “Let’s be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it.” This gave me a little chuckle because I always was somebody who needed everything resolved, everything discussed and spoken about, and wanted everyone to feel good about whatever situation may be at hand come the end of the day. People pleaser? Maybe. It doesn’t matter. Now, approaching my thirties, I’m realizing that’s not the case, not obtainable, and ultimately will drive you crazy. And truthfully, it has driven me crazy for a few years. I have had a distant relationship with many of my family members on and off for several years now. It’s something I never really addressed here, as it somehow felt like a failure, so I more so danced around it.  Just over the last year and a half I have started to come to terms with it all…the relationships and situations… or rather, I at least have stopped blaming myself for things not being perfect.

I’m slowly learning about what is worth my time, what is worth caring about, and that you can’t make everybody happy, because as cliché as it sounds we are really all responsible for doing that ourselves. Right?

I’m looking forward to spending more time with this audiobook and am interested to see if my perspective is changed at all by Manson’s words. Has anyone read it or have gone through a similar situation? As always, I’d love to hear from you guys. 🙂

  1. I listened to this audio book on a cross country trip this summer & it’s on point. Another one that rocked my world this summer was The gift of Imperfection. Definitely check that one out, also.

  2. COULD NOT AGREE MORE with the above! So true and definitely learned in your late 20s/early 30s on what and who matters! Love this and need to add to my girlfriends’ book club list!

  3. I read this book and found it to be refreshing. Most people are so concerned about what other people think of them/their clothes/their jobs/whatever that they don’t stop to think about what is important to them personally. For me, the idea of having a f*ck budget is super appealing too: it makes you think about what you are actually putting time and energy into. That kind of self-refection is something I think everyone should try at least once. Once you see where you are over-giving, you can then decide how to gently disengage.

  4. Found this a fabulous book as well, and listened to it as an audiobook too Definitely worth a listen or read. His honest frankness, and ability to describe topics that seem to be complex in a simple form, was very refreshing. I found myself having to pause it so often to write down a quote to look back to, which I continue to look back on every now and again! One that particularly resonated with me was about healthy relationships:

“Healthy relationships are not about giving a f*k about everything your partner gives a f*k about, it’s about giving a f*k about your partner regardless about the f*k he or she gives.’

  5. Thank you for another amazing book recommendation! I would love to see a post on your favorite books ever or books to read this fall! 🙂
P.S. Where is your sweater from? It’s amazing!

  6. I feel the same way about my family, I’ve accepted perfect is not attainable and drama is unavoidable so when I get off the phone I forget about it and move on with my day.

Saludos gigantes!
