Our Home Office

Oct 02, 2017 | By New Darlings

Our house is a two bedroom, two bathroom home.  As mentioned a while back, we had plans to make the second room a guest room, but the more we thought about it and ran into some furniture dimension dilemmas (hello narrow 1930s doorways!), we figured it would be more practical for us to make it our home office and then convert the garage into a guesthouse. We wanted to create a space we felt inspired to plan projects in, house all of our favorite books and cameras, and a place to just be able to work side by side.

Working with the West Elm team on this project was a dream.  We have had the pleasure of partnering with them in the past on our apartment living room design and were excited to make some magic together again.  You guys already know our obsession with their furniture and decor is real, plus their design team is always so fun to work with, so we were more than excited to begin the process together. Their faux leather office accessories immediately caught our eyes, so earthy tones and a mix of textures served as our jumping off point.

We added bookshelves with tons of our favorite books, lots of house plants, inspiring artwork, and magazine clippings.  It was so important to us to create a space that would inspire us from wall to wall.  The room is filled with faces of musicians, filmmakers, authors, artists, and family that remind us why we work in a creative field and why we love to challenge ourselves every day. Love that little reading nook in the corner with the big task floor lamp. It’s the first thing we see when walking in this room along with the “Want Better Not More Poster” and always makes us smile.

Ikea Bookshelves - Designing Your Space

You might remember the artwork above from our post with Saatchi Art. I like the casual feel of the prints leaning against the wall on the bookshelf. We were so happy to find the Danish style candlestick holders at a local antique shop in their original box, including one of our favorite finds of all: a collection of vintage F. Scott Fitzgerald novels, complete with newspaper clippings about him from years past.

Very high on our wishlist was a custom desk for two.  It was something we always wanted, but didn’t know how to go about it.  Our very good, talented friend Josh Rhodes saved the day! We chatted about how we would like to work together side by side and be able to bounce ideas off of one another, and he heard us loud and clear.  He designed and built this gorgeous desk for two, with unique geometrical drawers for files and desk supplies.  We are obsessed with it! It’s super minimal, plus its on wheels! So if we ever get the itch to move things around, he has us covered. 😉 If you don’t follow Josh, head over and give him a follow.  His work is innovative and beautifully designed.  Phoenix is lucky to have him!

Neutral and neat was our motto the whole time we were planning this space. The swivel office chairs feel like they were made for this room with their sleek design. They fit perfectly under the desk and have a low profile, which is great for the smaller footprint of this room.

Having a separate seating area away from the workspace was important to us. We didn’t have room for a love seat, but a pair of arm chairs by the window did the trick. The Axel chairs are cozy and comfortable, and they have served as a great spot to chat about our plans for the week. The room has become a place we love to work from and have friends and local collaborators come to spend time in with us, bounce ideas around, and feel endlessly inspired.  Even Henry loves all the comfy chair options to nap on in between his play sessions.  It’s a hit with the whole family!
