Scandinavian Cruise: Pt. II Berlin, Germany

Jun 08, 2017 | By New Darlings

We were going to wrap up the second half of our Scandinavian cruise (Tallinn, Stockholm, Berlin, St. Petersburg and Helsinki) in a blog post today, but after going through the photos we realized we took a ton in Berlin. From coffee shops to iconic landmarks, I guess we really enjoyed ourselves there! Click “read more” to see our photo journal from Berlin.

BERLIN

We visited:

Gendarmenmarkt
Our shuttle dropped us off at this square, which was located pretty central to many great restaurants and shops. We walked from here to Brandenburg Gate rather quickly. It’s a great spot to take in a lot of the ancient architecture and churches.

Johanenlies
Minimal home decor with amazing art work. We had the opportunity to speak with the founder, Mike, and he was such a welcoming and kind person. We wanted to see the Berlin Wall Memorial and he suggested a great walking route from his shop, where we were able to take in a bit of the city outside of the tourist attractions.

Berlin Wall Memorial
This memorial was incredibly touching to see in person. There are no words to describe what will come over you after seeing the metal bars that held the foundation of the cement wall, which separated the east and west. All around the area are photos of people destroying the wall in 1989. To be able to just stand there was truly something else.

House of Small Wonder
Originally a Brooklyn go-to for breakfast and lunch, they opened one in Berlin in 2014. The spot is beautiful and the pastries are quite tasty too.

Roamers
This place as like a secret garden…a little slice of the desert in Berlin if you will. We loved all the plants and ordered way too much food! The brunch was out of this world, and the cakes on the counter looked super tempting! Just a heads up, they don’t accept credit cards or reservations.

Brandenburg Gate
A famous peace monument, which is a must see if you are a fan of classical architecture. We also had a run in with Mickey/Minnie while we were there, as you might have seen above. 🙂

Hallesches Haus General Store
If we ever end up living in Berlin, hey ya never know ;), this would be our go-to coffee shop to work from. It is connected with a general store with the best gifts and home goods. We literally wanted to take home one of everything!

  1. Lovely photos, but I don’t get how this is a Scandinavian cruise when the only Scandinavian place you went to was Stockholm…? Tallinn, Berlin, St. Petersburg and Helsinki are not in Scandinavia.

    1. Haha, totally understand what you mean. It’s how this particular cruise was advertised by the cruise line, because it started and ended in Scandinavian cities. 🙂 We visited: Copenhagen Denmark, Oslo Norway, Berlin Germany, Tallinn Estonia, St. Petersburg Russia, Helsinki Finland, and Stockholm Sweden.
