Our Master Bathroom : The Plan

We’ve been working on our master bathroom and are slowly starting to see some progress. As you might have seen on IG, we extended our trip in Paris due to the delays at JFK with the blizzard. We’ve been keeping in touch with our contractor while we’re away and things weren’t as far along as we had originally thought they would be for our original return date, so after getting a few alerts on our phones about the storms and flights being canceled, we got in touch with the airline and switched our flight. We’ll be in Paris for a few extra days, which is a win-win: giving us extra time to explore the city and our contractor extra time to complete things, or at least get a little further with the project. Our friend Sarah has been keeping us updated and in the loop with the progress, along with many photo updates which we’ve been loving!

Here’s a peek at the current state of the house:

A little wacky, right? Above is the hallway that goes to our bedroom and the master bath. They’re just finishing up on skim-coating the whole house, smoothing out all the walls, and painting. Basically its one big dust filled, humid box right now, but not for long!

This was a hard project for us to initially get started on because when we first saw the house, we loved the bathroom. We thought we would just do few very minor upgrades, i.e. light fixture, towel bars, art, etc., and the bathroom would be complete. Over the last three months (wow can’t believe it has been that long already), we decided to just take the plunge and make this bathroom exactly how we want it. So here’s the plan…

Initially we thought the floor tile was original to the house, but we later found out that it was an addition, so whatever guilt we had about destroying original 1930s tile quickly flew out the window. We aren’t changing too much color palette wise, but we are freshening up the space with some new subway tile and dark hexagon floor tile for a nice contrast. We’ll be mixing in some brass accents and installing a big soaker tub. We found the majority of everything we needed on Wayfair, after cozying up on the couch one night browsing their Home Improvement section. We used Wayfair’s idea boards for each bathroom and even the kitchen, to get a basic feel of we’re going for. Seeing everything together, even just on the computer, really helped put our minds at ease for the remodel. What we love even more about Wayfair’s home improvement section is that you can now register for all of it even before your wedding, using their new Registry. This makes so much more sense than the crazy amount of margarita glasses and special mixers we registered for before our wedding. Haha

Here’s a few inspiration photos for our master bath…love the clean and minimal look of these spaces, while still having so much charm!

We have about another two weeks or so left on everything and really looking forward to a good soak in that tub! 😉

  1. We are in the middle of a bathroom reno as well! The best is going out of town and coming back to huge progress made by a contractor. Can’t wait to see it come together!

  2. Love the inspirations! We are planning on doing something very similar with our bathroom as well, but trying to do most of it ourselves. Thinking the tile might be something I don’t have the patience/skill for, you guys are so smart having a contractor take care of most of it! Can’t wait to see what it looks like.

  3. I’m so curious as to what grout color you chose? We are doing a similar style and are using the black hex floor tile and can’t decide what color to use for our grout. I love the after pictures and want to do something similar. Can you help me ? Thanks!

    1. Hi Alexandra, how exciting! Home renovations are so fun. We went with charcoal grout on the wall tile and floor tile. It ended up looking almost black. 🙂
