Portland, OR with Bridge & Burn + a PDX Giveaway

Nov 16, 2016 | By New Darlings

New Darlings - Portland, OR A few years ago, when we were moving from our first apartment here in Phoenix to our second, we put on our matching “Burn” tees and moved our life from one place to another. Shortly after that move, we decided to make our blog a full time commitment and left our traditional jobs for full time photography and marketing. “Burning bridges” is about moving forward, taking chances, and doing something on your own. We made that decision together and now in 2016, we had the opportunity to visit Portland, OR with the brand that celebrates “bridge burners” and inspires us to make bold moves. Bridge & Burn have been friends and partners of ours for years. They make beautifully designed, detailed, and fitted apparel for men and woman. Erik Prowell started the brand in 2010, opened up the Bridge & Burn Flagship store in 2013, and is a great friend and inspiring human being. If you are lucky enough to live in Portland, you definitely need to stop in and say hello to the team at B&B. We were extremely grateful to have the opportunity to visit the store a few weeks ago, tour the city with some of Portland’s finest and get a chance to see the amazing work that these people are doing. Portland_NewDarlingsNew Darlings - Portland, ORPortland_NewDarlings Our trip started at the ACE Hotel where we stayed for a few nights. It’s in a great location with access to some of the best shopping and eating in town. We were definitely spotted walking across the street to have brunch at Maurice’s a couple times in our short stay there. It’s that good! New Darlings - Portland, ORNew Darlings - Portland, OR The Bridge & Burn team surprised us with the sweetest gift basket upon arrival with some other great local brands, such as Wood&FaulkJacobsen SaltMinoux Jewelry, and Shwood Eyewear. Everything is locally made, plus the teams behind these brands are equally as kind as they are talented, which made us fall in love with their work and craftsmanship even more. We’ll be giving away a similar gift basket at the end of the post, so don’t forget to enter below. 🙂 Portland_NewDarlingsNew Darlings - Portland, ORNew Darlings - Portland, ORNew Darlings - Portland, ORNew Darlings - Portland, OR Welcome to one of the prettiest workshops and design spaces in Portland: the home of Wood&Faulk and Minoux Jewelry. Matt and Kristen share the bright and open place in PDX, where they create beautiful leather goods and handcrafted jewelry.  We loved learning about their stories and how each of them got started in the industry: Matt being a DIY blogger turned designer and manufacture, and Kristen who has a passion for using recycled metals to create environmentally friendly jewelry. It was crazy to see so much creativity under one roof. New Darlings - Portland, ORNew Darlings - Portland, ORPortland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlingsWe stopped at the Shwood workshop and got a peek at what happens behind the scenes there with Eric, the founder and designer of the company. He started Shwood Eyewear with a single pair of sunglasses he hand-carved out of a piece of wood, along with lenses he found from a second-hand shop in town. It was really incredible getting a look at the various natural materials they now use in their designs, while still managing to keep a hint of the original design elements. We also had the pleasure of working on a fun little project together: a hatchet, which came in handy for chopping wood for the fire pit at the coast later that night. Portland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlings Thinking we’ll definitely be stealing a few design tips from Prince Coffee Shop. We loved the rustic style with brass accents. Portland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlingsPortland_NewDarlings Dinner on the coast with everyone was truly magical. We couldn’t have thought of a better way to end off the night. Big thanks to Jacobsen Salt and Karl Holl from Let Um Eat for the delicious spread. Tuna tacos and the tastiest toast with pickled onions and hazelnuts definitely hit the spot. 3. Amazing!! I’ve always wanted to visit Portland. My husband and I have been researching places to go on a weekend gettway! I’m putting Portland at the top of our list. I love the local shops and that it is actually cold there compared to Southern California! LOL The local coffee shop is a must and would love to walk around Bridge and Burn with my husband. I know he would be exploding with happiness in there. Minouxjewelry is my personal favorite tho. Thanks for sharing your adventure!

  4. This is the best giveaway I have ever seen! Everything is so high quality and amazing. My favorite brand would probably be Jacobsen salt-I just love to cook! 🙂

  6. I love your blog! I’ve recently re-located from Chicago to Phoenix and your blog has been my biggest asset in finding the culture here. Coincidentally, I made an impromptu Portland visit for the first time shortly after yours and loved exploring the city based on your posts/creeping your following’s comments. It was short 3 day weekend in Portland which left so much behind for me to go back to see. Bridge & Burn is definitely my favorite brand from this post and I’m so bummed I didn’t make it there my first go around. Thanks so much for sharing great content, look forward to following this blog more closely now 🙂

  7. ever since you guys wore clothes from Bridge and Burn, i fell in love with the store! it is little expensive for a poor college student (aka me) though! I love seeing your blog posts and pictures on Instagram!

  19. I absolutely love this post! I’m planning a trip to Portland in December with my boyfriend. We’re thinking of moving there after I graduate from UT! I’ve been saving up for an Outsider’s jacket for quite some time, as I think it would be the perfect thing to wear to go hiking during our trip, and for our many trips to Colorado!

It so nice to see that support and focus being put on talented craftsmen, artists, etc. Bridge and Burn has so many amazing things and I love The Who analogy behind their brand (burning bridges and leaving behind the past so that you can move forward to bigger and better things)!! As always I love your blog and the two of you! You all are truly inspiring and amazing individuals!!

  22. These brands are new to me, but I can’t wait to share them with my friend who is currently visiting Portland. I hope to make a trip there next year and I look forward to creating great memories with the brands that you’ve shared.

  23. This is beautiful! Portland is definitely on my next up travel list. I am so inspired by the message behind Bridge & Burn and as a budding creative professional, I know part of the journey is deciding which bridges to burn and which to walk across. Thank you!

    Thank you guys!

  27. I just visited Portland for the first time and I didn’t even know about these cool brands. I will have to check them out the next time I’m in town. But I did try Lardo and Pine State Biscuits and Pok Pok Thai… drool.

Thanks for the awesome post! You two are truly darling! ?

  31. I love Jacobson Salt Co. I’m partial to it because I used to work next to a little shop in Boston that carried the caramels.

  32. I live in Portland Oregon and I love everything about it! One of my favorite stores to visit its on 23rd street and it’s called Sloan Boutique and What’s upstairs ? If you guys haven’t checked out 23rd street here in Portland I suggest you guys do on your next visit. It has many restaurants and little shops. You can literally spend all day there. Well I can lol.

  33. Last time I was in Seattle, I managed to drive down to Portland and spent the most blissful 12 hours there. These photos are really bringing it all back – must make a trip out there soon. Love your boots by the way!

  34. Love all your posts ! This one is just amazing great photos and just over all the trip seemed amazing. Hoping to visit Portland myself next year.

  35. This looks incredible; I love the handcrafted elements of everything you’ve uncovered in Portland. I think it truly speaks to the art vibe that exists there and shines a light on the still thriving skill of making your own goods.

Schwood seems like the absolute coolest company and something I can really get behind. I also am obsessed with the his & hers totes. Gorgeous

  36. I find it terribly inspiring that you two had the courage to pursue what you are passionate about. These companies have wonderful products, and my husband and I will definitely be future customers. Also, the prospects of winning a giveaway this large is really exciting. The deadline for the giveaway falls on my birthday, so it would essentially be the best birthday if I was lucky enough to win!
Keep up the inspiration new darlings!

  37. You two make everything look amazing. It’s exciting to follow along through your journeys. I’ve never been to Portland, but I’m thinking Bridge and Burn would be my favorite store!

  38. Just dreamy. I have a Bridge and Burn jacket from like… 2010 that I still love. And stayed at the Ace Hotel in PDX recently!

  39. Beautiful pictures of a stunning place… Oregon is where I left my heart after traveling there for a week back in 2012 and forever changed my world. I remember the grass was greener, the houses sweeter, the blooms were more vibrant, and just fell in love with the scenery. Next time I go I’ll have to check out those shops!

  40. I haven’t been to Portland, but it has been on my list for awhile, and all of this is making me so jelly right now 🙂 I will say, I follow a ton of Portland brands and Bridge & Burn and Minoux look amazing! All of them look amazing actually…that gift box is an absolute dream come true!

  41. This is one of my favorite posts thus far and Portland has always been on the map to visit! I can’t wait to see this amazing city, with tons of talent! I have worked and enjoyed many artisan shops through Etsy and I love them all. One of my favorites is Claire La Faye. She’s an amazing designer and has the kindest heart, with a beautiful brand. It’s so hard to pick one, as I love many. Thanks for sharing your trip with us! ?

But I must admit that the leather handbags from Wood&Faulk caught my eye.
Goodness, I am in love with all of the things!
Thanks for the opportunity to win this giveaway!!

  44. I love seeing my home through someone else’s eyes. Every one of these companies has such a strong place in this community, I love when they get together! As a busy student I don’t get to do as much as I like but visiting most of these places is almost always on the agenda!

  45. Love the PDX ❤️! I can’t pick a favorite because I love all the local businesses you’re supporting with your post. Thanks for spreading the maker love!

  46. I have been traveling for the last 6 months working and teaching and this gift box would be perfect for me! The new clothes after months of wearing the same outfits, wearing out my bag, breaking my last pair of sunglasses this morning, and the kitchen goodies for nesting back into my apartment and getting back into a grove! As a maker(glass artist) it’s so wonderful to see people appreciating and advocating for makers and small businesses! And to do it so beautifully! Kudos!!!

  47. Absolutely adore your blog! Thank you for this giveaway! Can’t tell you how much I love Portland and the local shops. I travel a lot for my job. I can’t remember how I came across Bridge and burn awhile back on Instagram…but I’m so happy I did. My last time I was in Portland, my ultimate quest was to go into the shop. I found it along with all the other amazing shops on the wepdx list! I will say along with the all the unique shops like boys fort, back talk, and animal traffic. I’m big on local food finds…and tea. Not to be biased cause my last name is smith…but smith teamaker is heaven. Can’t wait for the next time I’m back in Portland to explore more and the new artist I’ve now been introduced to from the giveaway!

  48. I’ve always wanted to visit Portland, seeing it from the pint of view you brought to us makes me want to go so much more! Defiantly moving it up on my to do list.

    Lots of love,
    Tawny

  57. This post comes at such a perfect time – when so much holiday fare comes from the “big box” places. Supporting smaller businesses like these is one of the things that keeps each city so vibrant, and you know they just pour their heart and soul into the work that they do and the products they sell. I’m just thrilled to have discovered so many other small & amazing businesses through your blog. Thank you for doing what you do!

  67. Amazing place. And I just fell in love with Bridge and Burn, I didn’t know this brand! It could be a good idea for these holidays! Keep on posting great photos and experiences, and thanks for this giveaway!

  69. THANK YOU so much for sharing these photos! I have been daydreaming of Portland for weeks! Fall in the PNW is so dreamy. I love ALL of these companies, but I think Bridge & Burn is my favorite, I love the his & hers bags, such beauitful leather lasts forever and gets better with every years wear layered on top!

The little turquoise ring from Minoux is also perfect, would go with my grandmothers vintage turquoise rings I wear so well.

You guys are the cutest. (I love your red coat!)

  75. I live in large urban area in the midwest and I love keeping up with your blog because it is so inspiring, it makes me love the outdoors so much. Living in a large city makes me feel trapped sometimes with no escape to this openness and nature you guys depict within your pictures. So I turn to your blog to escape from these skyscrapers that surround me. I love how Portland has brands that are locally crafted and one that stood out to me was Bridge and Burn. I love their one percent charity program and I love love how their clothing is versatile; you’re able to take a hike and still look classy for an evening out! I have never visited Portland, but it is definitely on my list of travels!

  76. The first trip my husband and I took, as a fresh relationship was to Portland. We absolutely adored the city and whenever I see photos it brings back a sense of romance. Glad you guys visited!

Also, each brand you mentioned is new to my sight but Bringe and Burn looks like they have a variety of cool things!

  77. What an amazing life you both lead! I love Bridge and Burn and your site/presence is absolutely stunning as well! My husband and I love Portland and everything it’s about, following posts like this

  78. I love the Aha purse and the gray shirt you are wearing in Bridge & Burn. Where is that from?
Iv’e never been to the PNW, but I know i’ll like it. Thanks for the list of go-to places. 🙂

  79. Isn’t Portland the DREAMIEST? We went last month (our second visit) to celebrate our anniversary (again, for the second time), and I fell even more in love with it, which I didn’t think was possible. Seriously could see myself living there one day. <3

I'm not super familiar with Portland brands, but those bags from Wood & Faulk are BEAUTIFUL.

Also, if you want to check out the travel video I made of our time in Portland, you can see it here. 🙂

  80. Always wanted to go to Portland again. A few hours in 2 days just isn’t enough. Would be great to visit the Bridge & Burn shop.

  81. I was supposed to visit Portland this past October but a huge storm derailed me 🙁 I’ve only heard of Shwood prior to this post but the tote from Wood & Faulk is calling my name!

  82. These photos are gorgeous! I love love love Bridge & Burn — have a winter coat from them from a few years back and just got the Outsider Warbler. Looooove them both so much.

  83. My wife and I love living here in Portland. We were both raised here in Oregon and I have to say it’s so awesome to see some these brands keep their originality and not change to much. For sunglasses I really like SHWOODSHOP, they make amazing eyewear.

  84. I’ve had a bridge and burn shopping cart tab open for about two weeks that I just can’t quiiiite justify financially right now, which is killing me – love their colours!

  85. I’m just up in north near Tacoma, WA but my husband and I love taking a drive down to Portland. So glad I found you guys (thanks to Apartment Therapy!) and appreciate the insider info on cool shops to visit on our next trip down there! They all look great but I’m a huge fan of leather goods so Wood & Faulk is #1 on my list!

  86. I visited Portalnd 5 years ago and stayed at the Ace as well. It was so aweome! Voodoo Donuts was a must visit as well as the food trucks.

  87. I visited Portland 5 years ago and stayed at the Ace as well. It was so aweome! Voodoo Donuts was a must visit as well as the food trucks.

  88. Amazing blog and amazing giveaway!!! Jacobsen Salt is my current favorite…love their honey syrup, use it in my morning cappuccinos! Excited for the opportunity to experience the other brands too! Thank you!

    1. That’s so kind of you Melissa. We’re so happy to be able to share these experiences and spread the word about amazing makers like the ones we met in Portland. Thanks so much for following along. 🙂

  95. Love Bridge and Burn. My favourite coat is their Warbler and mine was unfortunately lost this summer so need to get a new one for the fall and spring west coast weather!

  96. I live in Portland and love my city and Oregon as a whole. So much beauty and talented folks making a difference in the community. All the brands you interacted with on your trip are friends, so I couldn’t choose a favorite. All inspiring quality people representing great brands. Good picks!

  97. Wish I was in Portland right now! I love Bridge and Burn, but haven’t bought anything from them yet…methinks I’ll remedy that soon ?

  98. Love everything about this post. My favorite brand is Wood&Faulk. I’ve wanted a slouchy tote for a while now and the black one is PERFECT.

  99. OMG ! I’m so happy you got to experience Portland! What an amazing place everyone should have the opportunity to adventure 🙂 I was able to go recently on a road trip with my sisters and I absolutely loved it! Being that I am a huge coffee drinker, I am going to have to admit that Dutch Bro’s Coffee would be my brand of choice! That counts right? What better way to try and be a true local than by drinking the coffee everyone in the city raves about! Here in Cali it’s all about Starbucks! Don’t get me wrong, Starbucks is the bees knees, I work there even, however Dutch bro’s gave me a little extra life !

  100. I love Bridge and Burn clothing- I bought a shirt there this summer when I was in Portland that has become a staple. Looking forward to trying out more of their clothing!

  101. This is an awesome box! I love Bridge and Burn but most of the other brands are new to me and thats dope! Beautiful pictures…I need to find my way to Portland.

  102. I’ve always wanted to visit Portland! My husband and I may take a trip back there when he comes home from deployment- it looks so magical!

  103. Our family lived in Portland for a brief time. These photos are a beautiful reminder of our short time in that city <3

  104. These pictures are lovely! And such a kind giveaway! I’ve been wanting to visit Portland for so long and so I suppose this would be the next best thing, thank you!

  105. I recently bought my first Bridge and Burn rain jacket for a trip to Vancouver, BC. After spending fourteen days in the rainI I knew I had the perfect jacket. I purchased the Cedar Waxed Cotton and loved it. So please with the jacket I purchased one for my daughter-in-law.

  106. I’ve been wanting to visit Portland for so long and your posts have inspired me to move it up on my travel to-do list! I adored visiting Seattle and have no doubt that I will love Portland just as much. And I’ll be sure to add these shops to my list of must-dos when I do visit. Thank you, Rob and Christina, for fueling my wanderlust!

I like to come down and visit my son at ASU. I have been following Shwood for years. They are always pushing the envelope for sustainable sun-glass design.
